I can screen share via my MacBook with my husband's iMac across our home network, so I think the problem rests with the iMac, not with my laptop. Make Sure The Remote Computer Is Available And The Firewall Is Not Blocking Screen Sharing. I'm guessing it's the same issue with anything to mavericks, where the screen to be shared is running mavericks.
