If I shut down and restart with the card in place, it gets mounted normally and works perfectly. It's a harmless process that won't break anything - but be sure you have a backup beforehand anyway, of course. I wanted to access it and I accidentally dragged the mounted card and now it's gone from Finder. Also, since you pulled it out without having 'ejected it' you have to restart your computer as well.
